This is one of my favorite pictures. I love the subtleties in the shadows and color.

The Kids at Wesleyan College – SD14 Saga

How great of a price do I have to pay for this kind of image quality??

The Sigma SD14 experiment is going so-so. I love the images I get after the fact but it’s *getting* the images that is such work.

With all the lockups & waiting I feel like I really stepped down in camera reliability and functionality to step up in image quality. There is this older article comparing the SD14 to a Canon 5d (mark I) and I think he’s right on the money. However it’s just a comparison on between the image quality of the two. It is less noisy and is completely RAW so you get far better image quality BUT man, the hardware needs some work.

The camera body feels great and has that tacky rubber like my Nikon D2x. It makes it very comfortable to shoot with for an extended period of time. However, it locks up frequently and at the worst times. I believe that it is happening when the battery gets about half gone but I’m not sure. My suspicion is that it’s some low voltage issue but I wouldn’t know without breaking it….which I almost did today.

It was locking up and taking forever to write out the buffer. All the while the kids were wanting to move on and we needed to do several different poses. I barely captured half of what I used to could get with any of my Nikons or even my old Canon 20d. So, is it really worth it to have to go through so much heartache for strangely unique images?

Right now, it is…
